…Singer Katie MacColl reports a gratifying start to sales for her Songs for Sanctuary two-song cassette, recorded to raise funds to help Vancouver’s Sanctuary Foundation establish second-stage transitional housing for battered women. (Second-stage housing provides shelter for women past the usual one-month stay allotted them in typical transition houses, often an insufficient amount of time to deal with the many challenges faced by women who have decided to leave an abusive spouse.) “We’ve pretty much sold out our first 500,” MacColl says, “and we’re just waiting for the next pressing.” She says the cassette, with the Steve Mitchell-penned songs “Back Off” and “Light Burning Low” performed by the Katie MacColl Band and the Festive Eddies, has been made available at information tables set up at various local malls, with the next sale happening at the Guildford Town Centre May 14-16…

…Flattery will get you everywhere with us. For instance, singer-songwriter Katie MacColl writes to say that her “Mall Tour ‘93” to raise money for a second-stage transitional house for battered women met with an “incredible” response thanks to a mention in this space. “I didn’t think that many people read the (Music Notes) columns. I know better now.” As of yet, there is still no second-stage transitional house, but proceeds from the Katie MacColl Band/Festive Eddies cassette songs for Sanctuary did allow the Sanctuary Foundation to assist eight women in acquiring job training to achieve independence. MacColl will be selling the cassette (which is also available at A&B Sound’s Seymour Street location) at Eaton Centre at Metrotown August 24 to August 28 and at Coquitlam Centre August 29 to September 4, giving all of you out there another chance to disabuse her of the notion that anyone reads this…
